Creative Chats: MARC-Marc Bradley

Marc Bradley or MARC is back with an introspective song titled ‘What About Love?’. Frowned Upon has an exclusive interview about his current experiences as an artist and what his current plans are for music.

What is the back story behind ‘What About Love?’
“The song was actually written on a mini holiday I took myself on. I booked an Air bnb in the middle of no where for 4 days when all I did was write, read and paint with my phone no where near me.”
“The song was written from a perspective similar to John Lennons give peace a chance. It almost feels like a rhetorical question where it is a statement rather than a question.”
“The theme of the song is very much about that guilt from doing well in adversity and feeling like you’re thriving even when maybe you shouldn’t be or haven’t been recently, whilst still reflectively asking yourself, if you could go back to before you knew differently, would you?”
“I’m very proud of this song as it’s one of my most introspective to date.”
Was there anything in paticular that inspired you to write a more stripped back song?
“It was stripped back due to firstly logistical reasons and secondly being to deliver the track in the nature it was written.”
“That is the reason I feel it feels as vulnerable as anything I’ve done only potentially second to ‘fixated’ which was on the second EP.”
Are there any more songs in the pipeline?
“In terms of anymore songs in the pipeline, it was potentially going to be posted as the final one under this name as I look to maybe do things differently in the future. But I don’t think I could ever fully rule out releasing songs via this medium as it’s been my main creative outlet and platform since I was 20.”
“Having done music under the name MARC for 6 years, I don’t think I’ll ever stop releasing under that umbrella even if I do go on to start different projects in the future.”
What do you think is the biggest challenge faced by artists and creators at the moment?
“The biggest challenges an artist currently faces is the current dynamic in which music is consumed.”
“To constantly have social media content around your releases and to have a constant release stream of singles as not to be forgotten is more detrimental to the financial dealing of a project as well as being a creative drain on the artists. All to then be paid 0.00000001p a steam.”
“I think we’re all tired.”
In one or two sentences what has the last 12 months been like?
“For me the last 12 months has been musically my best to date. I’ve genuinely achieved some dreams I’ve held for years.”
“Playing festivals and going on tour with my Gin Annie boys has been the best and most rewarding experiences of my life. That tied in with the release of this track on top of ‘June’ last year.”
“I feel I’m personally evolving as an artist and performer, and I am looking forward to what the future holds in all of my creative projects.”.
“I’m grateful to my support network of my family and friends and musically, to my lads in Gin Annie (especially Lewis Turner) and my other musical brothers in arms of Thomas Ruston and Ryan sparrow. Without any of those, I would not be here still doing music 100%.”
