Creative Chats – Neon Fields
Neon Fields is a brilliantly polished three-piece band based in Wiltshire, UK, consisting of Ed Barrett (lead vocals), Chris Phillips (drums), and Piers Ward (keyboards/guitar). Frowned Upon was fortunate enough to send them over some questions about their brilliant rise to fame in another edition of Creative Chats.
What or who your biggest inspirations are?
The three of us have different styles and tastes that overlap. Ed takes inspiration from bands like Radiohead and intense rock from bands like Deftones. I (Piers) am influenced by IDM artists like George FitzGerald and Moderat, but I also have an interest in compositions for films, mainly sci-fi and roots in metal bands such as Tool. Chris has a heavier background and enjoys alternative rock and grunge, which is reflected in his drumming. The differences in our tastes and our willingness to experiment with them are, I think, one of our biggest strengths.
What made you decide to pursue a career? Was there a specific moment you can remember?
My main reason for involving myself in the music scene and joining a band was to create music. I started playing guitar in my early teens and immediately showed an interest in using it as a tool for writing songs. Ed (singer) had a very similar start in music, and before we met, he had a collection of demos ready to be developed. Most of these demos have now been reproduced and included in our discography alongside completely new songs co-created by the three of us.
How long has Neon Fields been doing this?
The band’s first iteration started in late 2019 and featured a ‘guitar-band’ setup. We began reproducing Ed’s demos in a rock and alternative style, with some reluctance, as Ed was always keen to go down an electronic route. Shortly into the project, the national lockdowns were imposed, and we could not meet. I used the time to produce electronic music and added new elements to some early recorded demos. These were well received, and we all agreed this was a more exciting direction. We spent the remaining time in isolation, writing, sharing, developing, and passing ideas on Google Drive. We decided to rebrand, and the tracks we had worked on in isolation became the first album.
What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far?
There have been many excellent experiences, but Neon Fields releasing a full-length album that we were all really proud of was a big highlight. The tour we organised independently this summer was also a great achievement. It was an awesome experience travelling to cities we had not played before and meeting fans we had only spoken to on social media.
Has Neon Fields got any interesting projects coming up soon?
We are currently working on our second album. While our first album showcased many of our influences and styles, the second album is shaping up to be more focused, based on what we enjoyed most from the first album, including the cinematic layering, darker tones, and compelling themes and storytelling.
Frowned Upon says go and check them out…that should do it. But seriously Neon. Fields is a fantastic band and a great group of people who deserve all of their success thanks to their hardwork and talent. Go check them out. Cheers.
