Streamer Teaser-Obsidian Esports

Frowned Upon was able to talk to this incredible person/company about the fantastic work in mental health that Obsidian Esports does. Not much from me today as the message down below is so important. Enjoy.

“Greetings, I am B. “Delirious” James. I’m a father of 4, and owner and operator of a startup esports company known as ‘Obsidian Esports’. I like to refer to myself as a multimedia monster.  I am an intermediate freelance graphic designer, event manager, content creator, video editor, audio engineer and rapper. My hobbies include carpentry, auto-repair, crafts, gaming and level designing. This is why I proclaim to be a multimedia monster? I do almost everything myself. A truly independent, one man army!

I have…

  • 6 years of professional graphic design experience,
  • 15 years of audio recording and engineering experience,
  • 4 years of level design experience,
  • 7 years of video editing experience,
  • 20 years of carpentry – which I will eventually utilize to start a designer furniture company,
  • And have only recently entered the realm of professional gaming as a content creator & streamer.

My venture began with the intent of just becoming a pro rocket league player – far from it currently but ready and willing to put in the effort. I found a platform that offered cash, for simply getting goals and just playing your best. Seems great right?  Until you realize you’re getting fractions of a penny for the hours you put in on that platform to -hopefully- gain first place. The highest I achieved in this platforms popular 2v2 tournament, was the top 5% out of over 4,000 players. However, after not being selected several times in a row, AND noticing semi-pro players being selected when it was supposed to be only amateurs getting a chance to bat.

Some real red flags are shown, and I refused to repeat the process daily for so little gain.

This made me dive a little deeper. Yes, there’s discord and social communities that offer tournaments – but very few LEGITIMATE companies. So I changed gears from just focusing on me, and my own gain – to creating something that ultimately supports every player in the world like me who isn’t great at it – but wants a chance to earn some income from their favorite hobby. It’s a stellar feeling, and I don’t want it for myself. I’m an individual that holds passion for making other people happy, and helping my fellow human whatever way I can.

When I shot the idea to my brother to start an Esports company that legitimately pays out – and runs additional services to generate revenue to help balance the negative equity of prizes; he only had one response. “That doesn’t seem very profitable.”  This is factual, and a hard to swallow pill for most. But being the humanitarian, and slight philanthropist I am, this doesn’t worry me. I can develop another company, or stay in my awful 9-5 to stay afloat.

The first individual to win one of our 1v1 $20 matchups messaged me later. He said it wasn’t much BUT: It was enough to get him food for a couple days. I stopped everything when I read this message from one of our players.  I didn’t fathom a simple $20 event could help someone in that way. I would expect a senseless purchase, or a small pizza, something to celebrate. But to utilize the money I gave away for 20 minutes of gameplay to feed yourself. That really shows me the value of what I do. They don’t know how those simple words have fuelled me to push harder, and get farther with my company to provide a rock solid platform.

This one small interaction with somebody I’ve never met, and likely never will meet, really set the precedent of the direction I want this company to go.  I have a 4 stage growth plan – but I cannot disclose each milestone I’ve set. I have to keep some secrets. That information will only be available for serious investors, and larger partners. What I will say now: Is my goal for this company; is to eventually build a facility to host private tournaments, have an arcade for members and a media room for content creators. An all around fortress of creative minds doing what they love!  Of course, we will also give support for those wishing to start out. Including classes, and artist/creatordevelopment programs to give them a head start in a flooded market.

What are your top 3 favourite games?

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This is the first open world RPG I’ve ever played. It was a Christmas gift when I was 8. The Nintendo 64 which I played it on, was a (6th) birthday gift that I still have in my possession nearly 30 years later.  This game was masterfully crafted. What I appreciated the most, were the soundtracks wonderfully composed!  If you know, you know!  When I repair my 64, I will be streaming an entire play through revisiting the best game I ever played.

Second on the list begrudgingly I’m going to have to say Garrys Mod. It’s a total waste of time, but yields infinite possibilities for the curious mind.  To elaborate, this awful game set the way to me learning the basics of Unreal Engine, texturing, and level design as a whole. As well as, running a community. I ran Imperial Community, which was a popular PERP (Pulsar Effect Role-Play) server. I worked my way up from a casual player to the community manager. This meant I handled the staff, sensitive information, and billing.  And then, I began getting curious about developing my own city, and unique world to drive around in and make beautiful. This lead me into tinkering with Source SDK: Hammer editor. Which in turn, lead me you Unreal Engine. Which I plan to utilize to create an animated short film that will be a psychological thriller.

Last and certainly not least.

Rocket League.

I saw this game launched and my initial reaction was “oh wow (sarcasm), car soccer. What a stupid idea. Then I heard a lot of people begin saying it was actually pretty cool. So I tried it out, and fell in love with it. But never played seriously. Until this year when I decided to work towards seeing the RLCS open. Technically I’m only a few months into this journey, despite having about 1,000 hours into the game.”

No one can argue that what Obsidian Esports is doing is anything less than incredible. Links to more information can be found below. Share the love.
