The biggest aspect that can’t be emulated through the larger broadcast promotions. Having followed Kamikaze Pro for years now I finally got a chance to go to their show in Great Barr for Kamikaze Pro Live 31.

Side note I won’t be mentioning all of the match results here, just the highlights and the atmosphere of the show. -results can be found at cagematch.net

Match 1: Man Like Dereiss V Nate “The Skywalker” Reilly

Normally a match where both participants are getting face reactions is difficult to pull off…that was not an issue here. A perfect way to open a show, both competitors being immensely athletic and impressive, by the end of the match having the whole crowd hyped up for the show. To use a term that has suddenly been thrown around everywhere at the moment, Nate Reilly is great at the flippy shit.

Both guys are definitely ones to watch on the wrestling scene.

Match 2: Brandon Jordan V “Unkillable” Ryan Parrot

Since the NWO made it cool to be the bad guy there is always issues with people being able to garner real heat. Ryan Parrot has managed it. The moment he came through the curtain, chants of “Kill the Parrot” erupted from every person in attendance.

Jordon played the part of smaller underdog brilliantly, with textbook “chopping the tree” moves. A solid match.

Match 3: Kieran McQueen V Samuel Hughes

There are only a few talents who the majority of people like, most people have different favourites depending on who resonates with you. Sam Hughes resonated with me. Confidence and great character work throughout, matched with athleticism of McQueen, this was a workhorse of a match.

Match 4: Kay Jutler V Alex Connors

The main event of the first half of the show was a lot of fun. Alex Connors could be one of the best chicken shit heels i’ve seen for a while, balancing being humiliated by Jutler after being rode around the ring, to exploding out with vicious offence, a great great balance. I have been aware of Connors for years, the first time seeing him I was not disappointed.

Describing Kay Jutler can be put down to two words…incredibly impressive. Built like a brick proverbial house, and pulling off moonsault’s is always incredible to see no matter what level. Played the part of “honourable” babyface to perfection, letting Connors get up after every betrayal, and even sorting some freebees out to a child that Connors pulled off a chair (the kid was ok don’t worry) this match was just so fun. Going all over the Collingwood Centre, slamming onto tables, chairs and ring posts this match was what wrestling should be…fun.

Match 5: “The Bad Girl” Chantal Jordan V “Influences Own” Hassan Ali

Hard hitting believable offence in another great match between two faces. This match was a huge showcase into how good these two stars are, especially with Chantal Jordan merging her MMA training into her move-set. The crowd work in this match was A class, and depending on your views on inter-gender wrestling, was done to perfection with smart and clean sequences, this match was so believable, and you did just lose yourself in the moment.

Hassan building a gimmick around PRIME is also very funny.

Match 6: “21st Century Hero” Luke Douglas V “The Cult Classic” Lucia Lee

Anyone who knows about the indie scenes in the area doesn’t need to be told how great Lucia Lee is. Huge huge huge reaction as she came through the curtain, that stayed through the bout with these well matched competitors.

Douglas is a born heel, and Lucia Lee’s reactions and crowd engagement made her loved by all in the room. These two complimented each other perfectly throughout the match, with their move sets and character nuances I ended up getting a bit too invested and forgot to get as much footage as I wanted.

Douglas and Lee are both champs in other promotions and I fully recommend you go and check them out for some great work, and that’s a Frowned Upon promise.

Championship Match: George Lydon (c) V MJ Grayson

The main event singles match. I deliberately didn’t look into the full card beforehand; I knew of the majority of the competitors but wanted to have that first time mind blown moment during the show… I got exactly that.

Mj Graysons look is fantastic and right up my alley as far as gimmicks go. And who doesn’t love some red ‘blood’ being spat out during an entrance. Opposing this was the reigning champ George Lydon, who has got the indie face look down to a tee.

AJ Styles has seemingly made it, so the only word used to describe anything good in wrestling is phenomenal. However, theres no other way to describe this match, from the liquid tie ups at the start, the crowd work, to 450 splashes and the over-the-top topes, the whole match was phenomenal with the crowd being electric from bell to bell.

No miss-steps and impressive work all round makes this match a must see.

Roulette Rumble-minor spoiler ahead

The ‘Roulette Rumble’ has the same rules as any battle royale, (over the top rope, both feet touch the floor blah blah) the difference being that the names are drawn from a hat by people in the crowd. The winner got a title shot at the next show.

Grayson started the match after cutting a promo ended up wrestling for over 40 minutes if my timings were correct, a great showing for him.

To cut a long breakdown short, everyone mentioned previously joined the match at different intervals with a couple of debuts from Kamikaze Pro’s dojo, great character work and improvisation throughout, this whole match was so much fun, being so close to a ring with so many competitors being thrown everywhere is a feeling you can’t beat.

Brandon Jordan and Lucia Lee were the highlights of this with great sequences working together. Douglas I think could get the reward for most times saving himself going over the top.

Final two got down to Luke Douglas and Nate Reilly, the crowd was already exploding for Reilly, with Douglas slapping and disrespecting him and after a mind-blowing and mesmerising sequence the Skywalker dumped out the 21st Century Hero and the roof was blown off.

The show ended with champion Lydon raising Nates hand ahead of their championship bout at Kamikaze Pro 32 at Stetchford Social in Birmingham on March 12th.

Some of the best wrestling I have seen for the past few months, so many future stars on one card and I have no real complaints at all from the show. So if you’re in the midlands area and want a good night out, you can’t do much better than a Kamikaze Pro show.

Head to the Frowned Upon youtube channel for a highlight reel from the show.
